Areas of Digital Humanities
From Digital Humanities Wiki
Activities that fall under the rubric of Digital Humanities might be divided into three categories:
- Research Tool -- Visualizations or other representations of data via digital methods. Visualization such as the presentations by Diane Favro and Chris Johanson at the November Seminar; graphs and databases for analysis such as Lev Manovich's Cultural Analytics.
- Object of Study -- Exploring the socio-cultural impact of digital technology from a humanities perspective or with a humanities methodology. Generally falling into the broader field of media studies, this would include the study of the Internet, YouTube, mobile media, video games, machinima, etc. Includes also race/gender/ethnicity and identity studies as they play out in cyberspace and other digital realms. Electronic Literature another example of digital humanities as object of study.
- Means of Expression -- This would include efforts to train students to 'author' academic arguments using multimedia desktop tools rather than the written word (examples include USC's IML, Georgia Tech's LCC 1101 series), as well as the communication of research through digital media (such as Vectors).
